What Is A Digital Story?
A digital story is both a process and a product. The process of Digital Storytelling includes unique facilitation components, skills, and techniques that help participants create meaningful digital story about their life. The product is a short 3-5 minute film, (digital story), that combines visuals, a voiceover, and music put together with video editing techniques that is unique to the individuals life story. As a certified CLDST Level 2 Digital Storytelling Facilitator, I run individual and group workshops that guide people through the process of creating this short film.
Research shows that creating a digital story with a trained facilitator benefits both the storyteller and the audience. With this trauma informed approach, digital storytelling can be grouped into these four areas of wellness.
Education and quality improvement
Advocacy/public health
Research (knowledge generation & translation)
Therapeutic intervention
How Does the Digital Storytelling Facilitation Process Work?
I work collaboratively with storytellers to craft an impactful narrative from real moments that have formed their life. We write a 300-500 word story, record a voice over, select personal or stock images, and add music. When complete a screening is planned to share the digital story with a chosen audience.
Creating a story together is a meaningful process of reflection on the diverse life experiences that bring us to today. At the foundation of this process is an ethical framework that puts the storyteller’s wellbeing at the forefront.

What Can We do with a Digital Story?
A powerful tool for education, research, advocacy, and therapeutic experience. These are just some of the ways that a digital story can be of use:
Amplify diverse voices from your community
Capture oral histories
Understand through lived experience
Engage with your stakeholders
Document a life story for your family
